On Sionareth, time is not just a matter of hours.
It is determined by two stars, two moons, light, shadows, echoes, and a bit of that peculiar strangeness which this world makes a habit of mixing into everything.
☀️ The Binary Star Kaelor and Vaelor
Sionareth orbits a binary star system formed by the yellow dwarf Kaelor and the red sub-dwarf Vaelor.
Both stars together determine the basic rhythm of the world.
The day is traditionally measured from the moment both stars appear above the horizon until their next joint sunrise.
This cycle includes:
- the light phase, when the stars are above the horizon
- the dark phase, when both disappear below the horizon
- all the weirdness between them – flashes, shadow shifts, and unusual echoes
📚 The Library Chronometer
The actual lengths of days are not always entirely equal.
For centuries, the cosmologists of Tal’gorr therefore observed hundreds of cycles and averaged their results.
To smooth out irregularities, they use a legendary artifact known as the Library Chronometer.
Its measurement determines the official length of the Sionareth day.
🕰️ Day and Hour
The result of this prolonged observation is a standardized day with a length of 24 hours.
The archivists accepted this number without a single objection.
To this day, nobody knows why.
The hour represents one-twenty-fourth of a day.
It is divided into:
- 60 shadows
- each shadow into 60 echoes
🌗 Shadow and Echo
The shadow is the basic short unit of time.
Originally, it derives from the movement of the shadow cast by Kaelor.
The echo is an even smaller unit.
Historically, it was defined as the return of a standard echo between two fixed rock walls in Tal’gorr.
Today, few people remember which walls they were. However, the name survived.
✨ Flash
Alongside the standard units, the people of Tal’gorr also use the flash.
This is a time interval corresponding to one quarter of an hour.
Originally, it was derived from the regular light interferences of Vaelor.
1 flash = 15 minutes
🌕 Veyra
Veyra is the larger of the two moons.
Its orbital period is 36 days.
It has a stable lighting profile and acts as a calm, nearly unchanging point in the night sky.
However, for centuries, observers have noticed a strange phenomenon.
The light in its vicinity occasionally behaves in a manner that resembles sound.
No one has yet managed to explain why.
🌑 Keth
Keth is the smaller, faster, and considerably more restless moon.
It orbits Sionareth in 27 days.
Its orbit is sharply elongated, and once every 108 days it performs something that should be physically impossible according to all known laws.
It flies straight through Veyra.
Not next to it.
Not behind it.
Right through it.
🔄 The Passage
The moment when Keth passes through Veyra is called the Passage.
It is the most important long unit of time used in calendars, rituals, and certain magical traditions.
The Passage occurs every 108 days.
For most inhabitants of Sionareth, it represents the natural rhythm of long time, much like a year in other worlds.
🧭 Overview of Sionareth Time
| Unit | Definition / Relation |
| Day | 24 hours |
| Hour | 60 shadows |
| Shadow | 60 echoes |
| Echo | the smallest commonly used unit |
| Flash | 15 minutes |
| Passage | 108 days |
✨ Cultural Significance
The joint rising of Kaelor and Vaelor is considered a symbol of new beginnings.
The dark phase of the day is not perceived as the absence of light, but as an equally important part of the world’s cycle.
The Library Chronometer belongs among the most precious artifacts of Tal’gorr.
And the Passage is the moment by which many cultures measure entire stages of life.
Bipilon’s Note
„Most worlds have one sun, one moon, and one calendar.
We have two stars, two moons, echoes, shadows, flashes, and a moon flying straight through another moon.
And then someone wonders why our cosmologists are a bit tired.“
„You inquire, Verdana Lux Datlesk responds…“
How is time measured on Sionareth?
Time on Sionareth is determined by two stars (Kaelor and Vaelor), two moons (Veyra and Keth), light phases, shadow shifts, echoes, and standardized units governed by the Library Chronometer.
What is the role of the Library Chronometer?
The Library Chronometer is a legendary artifact of Tal’gorr used by cosmologists to smooth out natural day-length irregularities and determine the official standardized length of the Sionareth day.
What are shadows, echoes, and flashes in Sionareth time?
Shadows and echoes are micro-units dividing the 24-hour day and its 60 hours, where an hour contains 60 shadows and a shadow contains 60 echoes. A ‘flash’ is a time interval corresponding to 15 minutes, derived from Vaelor’s light interferences.
What is the Passage (Průlet) on Sionareth?
The Passage is a major calendar cycle occurring every 108 days, when the smaller, restless moon Keth physically flies straight through the larger moon Veyra.
How do the two moons differ in their behavior?
Veyra is a larger, stable moon with a 36-day orbit where surrounding light occasionally behaves like sound. Keth is a smaller, faster, and highly elongated moon with a 27-day orbit that triggers the periodic Passage event.
