Verr’null walked through the streets of Thalgorrin toward the City Park. It was his big day — not only had he been accepted into the Guild of Free Delegates, but he had immediately been given a Task. He was to check the gauges on the park railing and verify that the recorded values matched the actual readings.
After the initiation ritual, his master had told him: “Verr’nulle, I’ve heard that you are not only responsible, but that you also possess Talent. And therefore I have been instructed to assign this task specifically to you.”
Verr’null blinked. His master had heard of him — and now he had a Task. This was more than an honor. This was a mandate.
He turned onto Library Square, where the Library stood, and opposite it the gate to the City Park. The gate had not been made here in Thalgorrah; it was a gift from the western realm of Velomar. Verr’null nodded contentedly… and then froze.
There was a sign on the stone pillar of the gate. Not nailed, not hung. It looked as if it had been there forever.
“We kindly ask citizens not to feed the local anomalies. If an anomaly begins feeding citizens, please contact the Guild of Free Delegates.”
Verr’null held his breath. This was an Event. And the Guild had been delegated.
He tilted his head and listened carefully. What if the sign made a sound? Nothing. Silence. Suspicious silence.
Verr’null knew what he had to do. He pulled a board with clean sheets of paper from his satchel and noted:
“I have been informed that the anomaly is feeding citizens.”
No one had informed him. But the sign implied it — and that was enough.
He looked around. It could have been the work of the Library archivists. But there was no one anywhere.
Verr’null shrugged. It was clear: someone here knew that the anomaly was feeding citizens, and the Guild apparently did not.
And because he was a member of the Guild of Free Delegates, he immediately knew what had to be done.
On a clean sheet of paper he wrote:
“This notice was not consulted with the Guild of Free Delegates. The Delegate hereby initiates a preliminary investigation regarding the feeding of citizens.”
Verr’null completely forgot about the gauges in the City Park. He ran back to the Guild building. A commission had to be formed, and a Citizen Feeding Control Day had to be declared.
Bipilon’s Note
“Disaster! Verr’null didn’t subtract those zeros from the pressure gauges on the railing! A seasoned Free Delegate should never let that happen.”
